ARTIST STATEMENT

Art is redemption, and when invested with spiritual significance it becomes enduring — like the magi gift — and enhances humanity's capacity for transcendence.

My work stems from deep-seated beliefs, which are variations upon familiar religious themes, even if obscured by a secularized vocabulary. Egyptian art and the portraits of Fayoum were my first awakening to art. Structure and form, and technical proficiency were some of the first lessons learned growing up in Egypt. The next impressionable effect on my work was cubism — taking me over 30 years to shake off Picasso. Followed by post-war art, I found my home when I discovered American Abstract Expressionism. Although the subject matter of my work is sometimes derived from Egyptian and western culture, the reference to American Abstract art is part and parcel of my process — gestuality like Pollock and De Kooning, and painting objects like Rauschenberg and Stella. Whether in painting or sculpture, I strive to convey a sense of spiritual structure using the language of abstraction, through layers of paint, medium or steel ultimately achieving a sense of transparency. For me, spiritual enthusiasms will strive to recover humankind's lost divinity. Each layer reveals a step towards that transcendence. — LUDVIC
